دانلود ANNUAL REVIEW OF IMMUNOLOGY Volume 34, 2016

Over 30 years ago, William E. Paul wrote the above statement as the prescient first sentence introducing the Annual Review of Immunology to the world. He went on to anticipate the impact of monoclonal antibodies, flow cytometry, cytokine biology, cloning of the T cell receptor, structures of the major histocompatibility complex molecules, genetic definition of immunodeficiency syndromes, and therapeutic immune modulators for treatment of many diseases. These, among innumerable other developments in immunology, have improved health and advanced other sciences. Though the revolution continues, the world lost immunology’s most prominent champion when Bill passed away on September 18, 2015. Bill’s contributions to immunology are legendary and are detailed elsewhere by others; here we highlight his contributions as the “voice” of immunology.

In 1980, Bill was approached by Raven Press to be the Editor ofFundamental Immunology, now in its seventh edition and well recognized as the textbook of advanced immunology. Around the time the first edition appeared, in 1982, the Board of Directors of Annual Reviews, eager to create the Annual Review of Immunology, convened a group of eminent immunologists. Among those participating at what turned out to be the journal’s first editorial committee meeting, Bill Paul emerged as the obvious Editor because he had the clearest vision of the scope of the proposed journal and the most enthusiasm.

Bill became very devoted to the journal and took great pleasure in its exceptional success. To his considerable satisfaction, the Annual Review of Immunology has been and continues to be ranked Number 1 by impact factor among journals in the category Immunology. In addition, it has frequently been ranked Number 1 among all the journals—several thousand—evaluated in the Journal Citation Reports, Science Edition. During his 30 years as Editor, 733 articles were published, serving to guide students and researchers as critical reviews spanning the entire field of immunology. The articles covered the immunological revolution, and as a collection, they are a historical record of the discipline.

These achievements were the result of Bill’s talent for attracting leading immunologists to serve as Editors and authors. He conducted the annual editorial committee meetings nimbly and graciously. His warmth, enthusiasm, and good nature were ever present. Each year, the intellectually stimulating conversations at the editorial committee meeting resulted in an extraordinarily valuable collection of a few dozen articles written by the luminaries of the discipline to illuminate the principal developments in the field. Importantly, with his good humor, each year he could always coax a few tardy authors to turn in their promised reviews on time!

As Bill’s colleagues at Annual Reviews and Co-Editors of the Annual Review of Immunology, we mourn the passing of a giant in immunology, a clarion voice who did so much to deepen our understanding by conveying the advances in the field of immunology. Each of us owes Bill Paul a great deal of gratitude for leading the way and for showing how it’s done—with grace and high standards. We will miss him immensely and extend our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
